Alsace
Alsace is part of the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, with the main wine-producing region being on the eastern border of France with the Rhine Valley and Germany.
Alsace Wines
Here distinctive wine styles are produced which are quite different to the rest of France and to the neighbouring vineyards on the German side of the border. Here the wines are predominantly dry, unless produced specifically as dessert wines - e.g. as late harvested wines. They are more refined and elegant than equivalent German wines. And, unusually in France the wines are identified on the label by their grape variety - principally Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Tokay-Pinot Gris and Muscat. The Alsace region has a semi-continental climate with cold and dry winters and hot summers proteced by the Vosges mountains to the west. Another feature of Alsace wines is the role of co-operative wine cellars, which are spread throughout the region and which often produce high quality wines.
